I think it's been a pretty disappointing year in metal (or maybe I've just been listening to too much synthwave to be discovering anything new in metal), but the end of the year might just make up for it. Looking forward to the new Deathspell Omega.

My favorite metal-related releases so far this year: Oranssi Pazuzu, Atomikylä, Aluk Todolo, Howls of Ebb, Terra Tenebrosa, Valborg and Virus. Probably in that order.

Looks like I'll be having some "trouble" at the end of this month though. A new 10-song EP by Those Poor Bastards entitled "Necrosphere" coming out on Oct 25, even though they released an album just 7 months ago now. I guess I will have some tied AOTYs, not that I'm complaining. Good to be a huge fan of a band that releases so often while remaining consistent with quality or even improving on it. Big Grin New Hail Spirit Noir Oct 28, and on the same day Tommy '86's "Transhumanism". Really excited for those!

I know that there's some Evanescence fans out there who want a box set of EVERYTHING, including the hard-to-find early stuff:

And I know there's some Trivium fans out there that want the demos and first album on vinyl in a lush box:

wut

I honestly didn't know collecting either of those bands on vinyl was a thing. But I know Trivium was all about the Emperor box, so I wonder if that was an influencer on the release.

I'm just shocked that Roadrunner STILL haven't done "Ascendancy" on vinyl. Guaranteed bank.

They're doing a huge In Flames box set too. I wonder if they were inspired by anyone... ;-)

box set mania begin

The major labels are always the slowest though, makes sense.

And a Hammerfall box! The In Flames box is limited to 100, the Hammerfall is 300.

Not interested in either though, I have the first three Hammerfall albums plus the only In Flames albums I like ("Colony", "Whoracle" and "Clayman") on vinyl already.

Also... if the Meshuggah box is anything to go by, they won't sound great anyway.

Wow, 100 copies only yeah, that will sell out but also a good idea not to do too many imo cause their catalog is very hit-or-miss and so I think even though the band is huge, you wouldn't find a lot of people who want to own it all.

OK - I think the original idea behind box sets within metal, like stuff I was doing or Nuclear War Now! or Viva Hate or a few others was bands whose whole catalog (or major part of their catalog) works well as a compendium (Neurosis I think suits the purpose also). But now it just seems like, any band with a lot of fans = box set. Which I honestly think is a shitty idea.

The amount of boxes coming out in early December makes it a bit of a Christmas cash-in.

Agreed, but I can see the appeal in dropping the whole discog at once for bands that have been OOP or never printed before. Do it all at once so you can shut the rabid masses up with a big box, then a few months after they complain about the box, drop the individual albums using the same plates and art (i.e. the current David Bowie box strategy). I'm fine with it in that sense.

... except where the fuck are the individual Meshuggah albums ffs
