And yeah, Het Patronaat fills up quite quickly, especially later in the day. Since they remodelled the 013 venue, visitor capacity has risen, and so they've been selling more tickets the past few years. The complaints will mostly be about Het Patronaat, since the up-and-coming, more interesting artists will usually play there, but the smaller venues (2 of which are bars) can also be really hard to get into. Good thing I didn't really have to go to the bars. Even the Green Room (room to the side of the Main Stage) might be a little too small these days. It would be sad to see Het Patronaat not being used any more, because it really is a unique venue. At the same time it'd be nice to be able to attend shows without having to wait outside in the cold. I just hope the festival doesn't grow much more. I had to join the line for Perturbator early, about 40 minutes before Zeal & Ardor's set had ended. There was a 20-minute power outage, apparently. I waited in line for 45 minutes, just to be able to get in. I ended up near the front though. It was awesome! Really wanted to hear Raw Power, but I can't complain.
Highlights:
•Those Poor Bastards. I think the festival really undersold their appearance at Roadburn, but it was awesome to finally get to see them live. My favorite band.
•Zhrine. Another Icelandic great. They left somewhat of an impression on me. It's pretty unique to see guys who look so clean-cut playing the brand of music that they do. The contrast between the music and their appearance only helps to accentuate their performance.
•Perturbator. Hope to see him again in a more intimate setting.
•Oranssi Pazuzu. Great set, but I always wish there was a way to make it last longer, so they could play more than 6 tracks. Although they were all great tracks. Seems they never play stuff off of their earlier records. Would love to hear Korppi or Komeetta live. Weird to see them play such a huge room though.
•Aluk Todolo. Hypnotic. Although I remember people walking into me, wanting to get closer at the exact moment one of the songs was reaching a climax. Ugh.
•Carpenter Brut. The crowd went nuts. It's still somewhat surreal to see people who look like standard metalheads dance and go crazy to this kind of music. There was even some moshing going on. The room was so full that there was hardly any breathable air.
•Author & Punisher. Great to finally see him live. It's a really unique show. Too bad he didn't play Terrorbird.
•Valborg. Heaviest band all festival. Total obliteration. Roadburn undersold them as well, but at least Costin Chioreanu made a nice poster for them, as one of 4 bands who got one made for them. They should invite the bands of Zeitgeister Music more often, they'd be some of the most deserving ones.
•Ulver. Great to relax to after the amazing Valborg set. Entrancing.
Bummed I missed out on the secret Misþyrming show @ Cul de Sac.
I guess there weren't really that many surprises, maybe Hypnopazuzu. I'd never really listened to a lot of David Tibet's stuff before. It reminded me of A Forest of Stars sans black metal, haha. They probably take some influences from him.
I saw my favorites and they all delivered. It was absolutely amazing! Next year's lineup has a lot to live up to.
