Finally getting around to listening to the new Fallujah. Those of you who are into them, did you like it? I'm most of the way through, and I couldn't even pay attention, it seems so scatterbrained. The riffs are all solid and production is fine but the storytelling, I am just unsure where is anything starting or ending or going.

I like it, but The Flesh Prevails is better. Although Dreamless has better production, the last half of the album does feel scatterbrained. Like the random Mike Semesky guest vocals for 3 seconds. Why?

Yeah, I definitely dug Flesh Prevails a lot more. I'll give it one more go but it didn't grab me enough on first listen. Too bad, cause I had kinda initially written the band off, then Flesh Prevails was like WHOA ...

Completely agree with the thoughts on the new Fallujah. I was totally blown away when I randomly stumbled on The Flesh Prevails, and had high hopes for the new one when they started teasing songs, but it still hasn't sunk in with me. Feels like they went too far towards the airy, dreamy almost trip-hop (maybe?) sound and didn't root it enough in tech death.
Flesh Prevails had a great balance I found. It had dreamy moments but it was still a solid tech death album.

Yeah Flesh Prevails was really surprising. I was expecting a chugga chugga record and when I threw it on it was just unexpected, really really pro stuff and original too. Taking influence from a few really cool things and building something that didn't feel too derivative of anything. I guess there was probably a lot of pressure on this album. I'll give it one more shot.

Not a big Opeth fan but digging this

New Opeth sounds like Mastodon playing downtuned 70's occult rock.
Opeth are NOT progressive, they are regressive. Meh.
Sounds like different Opeth again, and sounds like Opeth. I like it. Got my hopes up yet again, yay ?

I understand the comments you and others have made, but the whole thing clicked for me once I realized "Scar Queen" is basically perfect. Then "Adrenaline" hit me, then "Les Silences" – it cascades down at random until they all just... work. This is in opposition to TFP and Nomadic, which IMO are sequenced in a way where they 'fall in place' right from the start and it cascades as you listen. So they either fucked the sequencing this time, or deliberately sequenced it to be difficult and meander more than it actually does. And obviously there will be people who won't ever find it falls into place, of course. Just saying it will likely happen this way if it does. It's how they built the thing. |
