RE: Beer Recommendation Thread - Aldhissla - 01-10-2018

I am open to all sorts of styles and experimental stuff, so I'd be happy to subscribe. Too pricey for me, tho. Plus the wife would probably brag even more about me having some sort of drinking problem. Wink

Hmm... You can sneak one month in Smile

You can get the first month 50% off if you use this referral link:
http://mikkelleraps.refr.cc/juhahamalainen

You can unsubscribe from the Beer Club at any time, so you can buy February for half the price and then just unsubscribe. You can tell your wife it's just too good a discount to pass, haha

RE: Beer Recommendation Thread - Blood Music - 01-10-2018

Well, I cannot say if it's possible. But I had one of the beers from the new subscription, and I became hellishly ill at night. Think it was food poisoning. It wasn't a tolerance issue. Can you get food poisoning from canned beer? I had to throw up before I could sleep. Terrible night. And this subscription has really not agreed with me.

RE: Beer Recommendation Thread - Godflesh - 01-10-2018

Sure, it is possible. All others have said they are great and the pictures have fresh look in their beers. Some random cans may of course be oxidized or gone otherwise bad, bottles more rarely. You have some really shitty luck with these beers! This is like the counter-effect of the almond in the pice pudding.

Which one did you have? I haven't opened any of this month's beers yet, but I have to try that same beer now. If it was of the IPA/NEIPA style, was it of the regular IPA color or light orange/yellowish NEIPA color? If it was greyish, it most likely was bad. IPAs usually have a grey haze if they go bad. These however are fresh batches and customers have made no complaints either. I've seen a hazy light orange NEIPA gone greyish in one of the pictures posted by the MBC people. That had clearly gone bad and he got a replacement in the following box. All others had good ones.

The main rule with beers is that if it looks and tastes weird, it very possibly has gone bad for one reason or another and you should pour it down the drain. Of course it depends on the style too. Some smell weird because of the style, some look hazy or have a weird colour because of the style or additional ingredients used, some look awful but are such on purpose. My wife often comments especially on my lambics, sours and goses that they smell awful, like they've been soaked in horse dung or something, haha Half of those do smell very pungent. Then again, I hate the smell of most cheeses, but most of them still taste fantastic - just like the beers.

I've had to throw away only three beers well before the best before date in the last 15 years, and many stronger ones should get even better a few years after the BBD. All were by different breweries and, surprisingly, all were bottled beers.

I believe it was this one : "Beer Geek Vanilla Maple Cocoa Shake"

I couldn't finish it, but nothing seemed wrong with it other than being a bit bitter for my tastes. But by the end, it was just too thick. I drank about 80% of it and then a few hours later was so nauseous I couldn't sleep and had to throw up to calm down enough to sleep. Was totally fine in the morning, no hangover or nothing and had drunk plenty of water, so I'm 99.99999999% sure it was no tolerance issue. Something wrong with the beer.

Well, don't mean to make you feel bad but that subscription was one of the worst things I've ever bought online. :|

RE: Beer Recommendation Thread - Blood Music - 01-10-2018

Holy fuck, I just saw the charge now - 81 EUR?! For 8 cans of beer? And one that gave me food poisoning.

Fuck. Hah man what did you rope me into - fuck that.

RE: Beer Recommendation Thread - Godflesh - 01-10-2018

Oooh, that's a good and sweet one, can't wait to taste that one again. I have two more in storage, but I'll taste the one that came with the box, just in case it's from a different canning than the one I had a month ago.

If you take one 500 ml beer with 13% ABV alcohol, you definitely shouldn't be throwing up all over the place. If you have several without water aside and rush too much, then I'd understand, but this is not a tolerance issue. We have two kittens moving in on Friday, so I have to try this fast, in case I end up in the same state as you.

Don't worry, I don't mind if you don't like the type of beers that came in these boxes. My wife doesn't like most of them either. Just like Blood Music vinyl, not everyone likes everything that comes out. Some like only the extreme metal section. Too bad that this happened to be the worst online ex tempore purchase for you. For me and a few of my friends it has been heaven so far. Are you going to sample the rest of the box or are you ready to burn the fucker to a crisp? Smile

RE: Beer Recommendation Thread - Godflesh - 01-10-2018

Yeah, I said the Beer Club box is 500 DKK (which equals €71), the Beer Mail is less (350 DKK which is €50), and that the MBC box offers good and expensive high-quality beers fresh. You just happened to pull the shortest straw in the canning line Sad Ten euro for delivery to your door is not much for Finns, especially if you think that you pay something like €7 for getting one LP delivered within Finland to a post office, not your home.

That one single Beer Geek can you mentioned is available cheapest in the Mikkeller webstore and that one alone costs 120 DKK (€17). I think it's almost worth that much, I'd pay €14 for another, but it's truly a bummer if THAT one was contaminated.

Good beer often costs a lot even online, something like €6-10, especially if it's nearing the 10% mark. Fantastic beer often costs €10-30. Sure I could go to Alko or buy online ten ok/good beers for €50 in the hopes of some being great. I'm tired of buying mediocre beers for €4-5 and then thinking 'Oh well, that could've been better, why didn't I buy this or that instead' or thinking that it was just Ok. If I buy music, I want it excellent too. I don't have shelf space for mediocre music anymore. I had 30 years ago. I want to discover new beers and have most of those so good that they leave me feeling I could buy another one if I had space. Just like music.

Sorry if this feels like I'm ranting and frothing in the mouth, haha
I guess I'm just going over in my head the reasons why I'm still in the beer club. The monthly beer boxes from two different places I've had in earlier years have been what I'm trying now to avoid. They cost around €50 + shipping each per month, with 8 beers each. But most of the beers were ok/good and they were of the middle strength, usually with one great beer each month, and only one topping 7,5% ABV. Comparing those to Mikkeller Beer Club makes a huge difference for me. This month I've tasted 6/8 of the beers and they are fantastic for me, I'm glad I got second cans in the fridge. And 5/8 of them are between 7,5-13% ABV.

I love the beers in this box. I'm in for a trade again Smile

Are you sure you don't want to taste the Even More Bible Belt? It's 13% and I have two of those now and a regular Bible Belt and a barrel-aged Bible Belt. It's hard getting these over ten ABV beers downed with small kids and work and all. You'd help my life a little. That's a €10 can, that.

I'm making an order to the Netherlands next week and I'm getting some great imperial and BA stouts to age at home. Did you taste the Pecan Mud Cake from my box yet? I gotta buy one of those for storage from there, I could get you another one too. It's €7,9/bottle. Did I put Tsarina Esra in your box? I could get you another one of those too.
