RE: Beer Recommendation Thread - Blood Music - 12-26-2017 Really enjoyed this - huge thanks to Godflesh for trading away my beer subscription, really wasn't into what I got. https://www.ratebeer.com/beer/orval/835/ RE: Beer Recommendation Thread - Godflesh - 12-27-2017 (12-26-2017, 03:01 PM)Blood Music Wrote: Really enjoyed this - huge thanks to Godflesh for trading away my beer subscription, really wasn't into what I got. Yes, Orval is one of the best Belgian beers out there. Westvleteren 8 and 12 too. I haven't been able to directly sample the differences in bottling years yet, but I have 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2017 waiting to be sampled against each other some day/year. It's *very* enjoyable cheese lover beer. I should try it with Orval and Chimay cheeses too
RE: Beer Recommendation Thread - perennial_quest - 12-28-2017 As much as I am a fan of Belgian beers, I never really liked Orval. I've tried it a few times over the years and I don't think it's bad, but I don't find it good enough to buy more. I guess it's not just my kind of beer. Chimay is another story, I love those beers! That, and the Trappiste Rochefort 8 & 10, Tripel Karmeliet and Gouden Carolus Tripel. I never had the chance to taste Westvleteren. I never seen one in my area. Chimay blue is great as it is, but I need to taste the cognac and rum barrel versions too to find out if they can outdo themselves. Those are waiting for a proper occasion in the cellar. Thanks, man! Got the package today . RE: Beer Recommendation Thread - Godflesh - 01-04-2018 The January Mikkeller Beer Club box is amazing, in my view at least ![]() J will be surely disappointed, because instead of focusing on just dark beers for winter, they decided to make the 8 beer box more interesting, but still with some dark strong beers. Five of them I already managed to taste late last year - three stouts, one IIPA and the sour berliner weisse - and I love them. J, we can arrange something again if you want to get rid of the other beers than stouts. As for me, I'm really happy with this club. I'm getting rare, strong and high-quality beers for cheaper price. Nearly every single one has been good/great/stunning and going through the box and its contents is always a journey with discoveries. The Hop Terroir series needs really some digging in and buying more variants to check them all side by side. It presently has five different beer variants: two different hop variants grown in different climates and terrains (Europe, USA, Australia) to see how those affect the same hop variant. Evem more like the grapes in wines, the hops make the same base beer have very different and distinct flavors. This month's beers: Hop Terroir x2 (both 6.8%) Two beers from the Hop Terroir series. The same beer (NEIPA) with hops from two different climates and terrains to see the differences they make in the same base. First one with Cascade hops from Germany, the other with Amarillo hops from Idaho. Beer Geek Breakfast (7.5%) Oatmeal stout brewed with coffee, a slightly different batch than before, reportedly the best of this ever. Fruit Face Black Currant (4%) Berliner weisse, a sour ale with blackcurrant, ginger and lime zest Even More Bible Belt (13%) Imperial stout with coffee, vanilla, chili and cocoa nibs Weird Weather IIPA Lactose (8.3%) Double IPA with lactose Beer Geek Vanilla Maple Cocoa Shake (13%) Imperial stout brewed with vanilla and a shitload of maple syrup. Supah Sik Spells (8%) Imperial IPA (for Beer Club, not in webshop) RE: Beer Recommendation Thread - Emplate - 01-06-2018 Have you guys tried Pinta Imperator Bałtycki? I've had it in my fridge for like three weeks now, as I haven't found a right mood/time to drink it. Now I finally opened it, and holy shit, that's some good stuff! It's dark and thick, well balanced with sweetness of chocolate and some really nice hint of coffee, topped of with an amazing taste of hops I feel I've rarely encountered in porters. I do not wonder it has an average rating of 4.0 on Untappd. RE: Beer Recommendation Thread - Godflesh - 01-07-2018 I've heard it's a really good one. I haven't run into it yet, but it's definitely worth trying. I've noticed that nearly every beer that has an average of 4 out of 5 on Untappd, or higher, is really worth trying. That's based on several hundred samples of 4+ beers. RE: Beer Recommendation Thread - Blood Music - 01-09-2018 I got the box, canceled the subscription already. Damn, disappointed about how that all went down ... RE: Beer Recommendation Thread - Godflesh - 01-10-2018 I have trouble understanding how someone could be disappointed with these boxes. There have been some complaints about the contents occasionally, but none of that actually has anything to with the quality of the beers. Some people have been ordering both the Mikkeller Beer Mail and the Beer Club box and in some months the contents have overlapped for 3-4 beers. The other complaint some people have is that their favorite beer styles are not represented enough. There are dozens of beer styles, so there is no reason to keep a beer subscription limited to a few styles. If almost half of the box are strong dark beers, I think that's rather limited already. Those that have been longer aboard have noticed that the beer quality has improved over time. Now they want also more exclusive beers in the box, but that's hard to make happen for this cost. The general opinion regarding this month's box is the same as mine, it's fucking awesome! |
