Let's give this important genre a thread too.
Just kicking this up by saying that this year I've bought at least the Triptykon debut, new Church Of Misery, With The Dead, Swallow The Sun, the Wounded Kings debut and Electric Wizard's Supercoven. Not much to say about these than that they all are crushing albums.

Triptykon; bucket list band right there. Gotta see 'em live at some point! Missed them at Eindhoven Metal Meeting in 2014 because my dumb ass didn't get into them yet. Eyeing a fest in Belgium coming August. Really nothing quite like their sound (and Monotheist).

Pallbearer's Foundations of Burden was on many "the best of 2014" lists, but I didn't come around listening to it until recently. Don't know why I've put that off so long, it's one hell of an album! I simply love the guitar tones in this one. It certainly pays respect to 70s, but I think they throw their own spice in the mix as well. Sometime's it feels like there's too much retro worshiping going on the scene. Don't get me wrong, I love 70s stuff, but I think the best 70s rock/heavy was done in the 70s. Doom is something I can get behind. I'll be going out soon to see Cult of Luna so don't have time for a full post, but I feel Mourning Beloveth require more attention. I have a love-hate relationship with doom. I either quite like it, or find it pretty boring.

I think to some extent that's pretty much the relationship everyone has with every genre :) If someone would claim to love everything one genre has to offer, I would be highly skeptical about either honesty or musical taste of that particular person. Possibly both.

Well, by that I mean there's nothing in the genre that I just think is ok. It's either just boring or I really like it. Whereas with, say, black metal, there's acts that I wouldn't say bore me, but just think they're average.

I've only just started really delving into the genre. My shared-favorite album of last year was Valborg's "Romantik". Anyone else dig that album? Synth-driven death/doom. If you're familiar with the band: this does sound a lot different from their previous efforts. They're part of the Zeitgeister music label, which is one of my favorite labels. They release music of different genres, but it remains akin in spirit. Just a handful of talented musicians take care of all of the projects. Klabautamann and Owl are some of my favorites too. Klabautamann is supposed to be recording a new record this year as well.
If you need some more convincing, Tom G. Warrior himself invited them to be a part of his curated Roadburn event, "Only Death Is Real". He also included Romantik in his list of favorite 2015 albums.
