Well now they have to pay to re-press Nothing and ship them out to everyone for free, so wouldn't they have saved a bit of money doing QC? Obviously they can't count on always catching an error that would've cost more than QC, but I'm sure they could recoup the cost elsewhere when they do so much mailorder business.
Oh sure, but isn't this an age-old human thing? People buy 10k cars that need tons of TLC instead of just going all in on a 20k car that will work like a warhorse.
They're trying to cut corners and hoping it'll pan out in the long run. It might, it might not. I'd rather save myself the extra energy and embarrassment. I have caught tons of problems when QC'ing which has led to repressing many parts before they went to public.
I am quite convinced that most of the larger labels are just interested in the medium as a device for transmitting the material (and bringing in revenue) and not actually in the medium itself.
