Discuss rap, hip-hop, and related.

As for me:
I'm really hoping clipping. release an album this year. I loved their sophomore, CLPPNG.

I can say the exact same thing about Run The Jewels, of course.

(Somewhat) Recently released albums I've been digging are:
milo - so the flies don't come
Very chilled out, conscious, philosophic. The production is just weird sometimes. Produced by Kenny Segal.

Kendrick Lamar - untitled unmastered
Just... Really good hip hop with some soul, jazz, etc.

Oddisee - The Good Fight
Self-produced, and just a really good, diverse album, but still pretty laid-back in general.

Ceschi - Broken Bone Ballads
Not entirely hip hop. This album has tracks that are entirely folk-y rock, tracks that are just rap, and tracks that have elements of both.

One rapper I like a lot who goes by Open Mike Eagle released an album recently I've yet to check out.

Is trip hop related enough? Suppose so? Just a few days ago listened to Massive Attack's latest EP, Ritual Spirit for the first time, and really digged it!





Otherwise rap/hip-hop is really unknown territory for me. I've always thought that there could definitely be something for me to enjoy there, but I just haven't found it yet. So still being kind of open minded towards it, unlike many other fellow metalheads. Therefore, if someone could recommend some really good bleak and atmospheric rap/hip-hop, it would be much appreciated :)

I haven't really explored trip hop before. I think FKA Twigs is considered trip hop and I like her stuff a lot.

As far as "bleak, atmospheric" hip hop I'm not sure what I could recommend. milo - so the flies don't come is pretty atmospheric but I wouldn't call it bleak. I'll have to sit on that a bit more.

Listened to that the other day as well, or at least that track. Their "Mezzanine" is something that is recommended to me a lot.

I'm fairly unfamiliar with rap and hip-hop as well. Despite Eminem being one of the first artist I got into when I was a boy, hah. Then came a horrible nu-metal phase and a lot of  not even bothering to check out music before I finally became too "trv kvlt" to enjoy anything else. Genres like synthwave and doom country opened things up a bit and made things less monotonous. On-topic, I was recommended these guys by a friend, who is simultaneously in love with Deathspell Omega, not too long ago:

Never really been into rap / hip hop honestly. Recently though, found these Finnish, I dunno exactly what kinda rap they are, artists somewhat enjoyable. Artists like DJ Kridlokk, Eevil Stöö, Likanen Etelä etc. Would link them youtubes but am on phone in a bus so that's too much of a chore.

I like rap/hiphop but more older artists like Ice-T,Ice cube, NWA,Snoop,Dr. Dre,NaS, Wu tang+ solo projects,Eminem, Run DMC, 2Pac Warren G and i love Nate Doggs voice.
I find Kendrick Lamar interesting though.

I cannot get into a lot of older stuff because I find the instrumentals to be super lacking, but I haven't checked out all of them yet. You should try Czarface.

If you find Kendrick Lamar interesting, check out the album Sour Soul by Ghostface Killah. The instrumentals are done by this experimental jazz group BADBADNOTGOOD.

I wouldn't call so the flies don't come atmospheric. You should've recommended Things That Happen At Day // Things That Happen At Night and or A Toothpaste Suburb.

Love Kendrick, and was impressed by untitled unmastered (I actually just pre-ordered the LP for this). It felt more cohesive than "leftovers" probably because they all came from around the same time.
